Tending Our Spiritual Garden

“Mary, Mary, quite contrary, how does your garden grow?” Garden Heritage I remember my grandmother reciting those words to me from the Mother Goose nursery rhymes book she favored. She was also quite the gardener, which probably explains her love of this particular nursery rhyme. She had two gardens in two counties and canned, froze, and preserved to her...

I Am Truly a Miracle
Are You a Miracle Too?

Like the lives of many who are reading this, my life is not picture perfect. The history I have lived is undoubtedly less rocky than the lives of scores of others. Being a survivor of an assault pregnancy at the tender age of fourteen does not make me a miracle, however. Although I was blessed to go on to finish...

The Recipe for a Faithful Life

What does baking and a faithful life have in common? The answer lies with the ingredients and instructions. A correlation recently occured to me while performing an ordinary task. I often bake our daughter’s favorite pie for her birthday. The only recipe I have is old. It originates from a great-aunt who died 30 years ago – in her late...

Cultural Snowflakes and Christianity Lite
A Catholic Solution to Both

We find ourselves in a world ruled by feelings these days. The harsh realities of truth and boundaries are hidden from view. In their stead we find that we are simply languishing in an imaginary comfort zone of our own device. Sometimes the conservative media types call those suffering from this syndrome, “Snowflakes”. A rather apt, albeit edgy description, considering...

The Parable of the Two Sons Is Relevant to Us

In Matthew 21:28-32 Jesus shares the parable of a man’s two sons. When asked by his father, the first son refuses the request to go work in the vineyard. Yet, after his impulsive denial, he goes and does the work dutifully. The second son, fails to go as he had agreed – having given an affirmative answer with no intention of obedience....

Catholic Life In Our Times

Catholic life in our times can be trying but, with our trust in the Lord, we will be triumphant through Him. As I reflected on the name of my blog, I realized the time had come. Designs by Birgit no longer represents my mission or my focus in life. Begun as a Mommy Blog, Designs by Birgit shared the usual...

Playing Games With Your Soul

We can probably all relate to the little games people play in their lives. It goes something like this: the van is running on fumes and I am well beyond tired and already bought groceries and shopped at the mall and attended t-ball practice and I just cannot bear to pull up to that pump. I play the ‘can we make it home and back to the pump’ game and most of the time I make it.

There are many similar ways that we sometimes (often) play games in life – at least this has been my experience much more often than it should. Many of us share those Scarlet O’Hara moments when we resolve to take care of x, y, z – just as long as it can wait until tomorrow. But is playing these waiting games a good idea when it comes to our souls?
